Luxury Motel 02:24
You'll pay with a heavy hand Caught the sick inhaling sand Darken down the dimming light Went downstairs to find a fight Oh my dear old friend you have grown old and worn in downtown After I saw the red planet there On the balcony, I went downstairs Oh my lovely sinner in my life, in downtown Oh my dear old friend you have grown warm and known while downtown
2.
nylons 03:14
The moment I get comfortable I'm wanting for more Freshly settled in my seat then looking for the door I'll build a white fence up, paint over the fear Then the fog in my head will get that much clearer Let's fall out of love, and then back into Can't help but fall in love with you You falling with me 'cause I'm falling with you Can't help but fall in love with you I can't decipher the feeling, I cannot extract it Like a sunbeam that's hot but refracted So run your hands through my hair so that I can't hear But the look on your face has made the meaning clear Let's fall out of love, and then back into Can't help but fall in love with you You falling with me 'cause I'm falling with you Can't help but fall in love with you
3.
If what we'd like is out of reach If I speak for you will you speak for me But if we live redundantly I'll tire of you and you'll tire of me So hit me babe, I deserve it all And I think I might enjoy the fall You've won my interest but not my heart Can't find a way to be apart

come over 02:49
6.
Oh, will you take me there? 'Cause I don't know the way I'm so afraid to go, but petrified to stay I'm scanning the horizon, so many bodies of land I keep casting in the anchor; do I have to find a place to stand? Now I'm in downward dog, blood filling up my head I kept your leash so, so long, then cut it off instead Now, untethered completely, I'm walking on my hands My feet are reaching for the sky, now Where are they gonna land?
7.
with me 03:03
Your tousled head, tangled in bed In the sweetest way Before you go, I'd like to know, Can you spare another day? I want you to stay Stay with me I throw my word in I'd take your burden If I could take it all on me And you're distant now, but I'll show you how Just how good this could be But you've got to let it be Be with me
8.
I am a man of style in optimum health Am I riding the the wave? I am the wave itself I am a pious one, now an irreverent nun Irrelevant what is rare, but what is desired? I'm tired of being the good one I wanna open up and have fun We can't get back to the old world So turn the radio on You decided not to decide, hot blood in my ears Everything is perfectly swell, peekaboo tears Surprise, now deathly alive, electricity Can you see yourself in my eye before you kiss me? I'm tired of being the good one I wanna open up and have fun We can't get back to the old world So turn the radio on
9.
I was losing my mind, Losing an old man's game Double tall, shot and fifth Well with no escape I threw away my empty smile I never even wanted to play Laura Mulvey Made my eyes see Madame Gandhi, bleeding Made a place for me Sky high cheek bone It's perfect, bought and canned Spoils when you crack the seal Fill in who I am Airborne, weather torn and Wrinkled is the plan Saint Annie Made a place for me, she said "Take a seat" There is a place for me Sophie She's still ascending My namesake Patti You all made a place for me
10.
independence 04:06
We traded organs with each other 'til there was nothing left What do I have to give another? I hear the birds when I try to sleep But you took the voice clean out of me You wouldn't touch me 'til you'd want some With independence comes such such loneliness Don't wanna be lonely with you The mattress is already warm, it's almost like I've been here before Biding my time, biting my tongue I'm picking pieces of the world to fill my empty space Why am I missing your embrace? With independence comes such such lonliness Don't wanna be lonely with you

about

A compilation by Beet Fat Records, consisting of 12 tracks that span the decade of activity on this bandcamp page. Re-released and remastered from the original recordings in 2022 and made available on streaming and physical cassette for the first time.

Review by J Hubner, Whatzup:
"So who is sundogsarah? Well, up until a couple weeks ago, I had no idea. But it seems that sundogsarah is the DIY musical project of Fort Wayne singer-songwriter Sarah Smith.

It’s also worth mentioning that she just released a best of collection with Beet Fat Records titled The Best of sundogsarah 2012-2022. So sundogsarah has been around for a decade now, and after listening to this best-of set, I’d say she could be around for another decade easily.

The Best Of consists of 12 songs culled from various singles and EPs Sarah Smith has released via her Bandcamp and SoundCloud pages, starting with “Luxury Motel” in 2012 and spanning a decade of lo-fi vibes, folksy tunes, and stacked harmonies that feel both lived-in and emotionally engaging.

Smith seems to pull inspiration and influence from all directions. There are touches of St. Vincent, Sparklehorse, and even early Liz Phair, but nothing on this collection screams out any of those specifically. I can also hear the spirit of Sufjan Stevens and even The Walkmen in these songs (but that’s just me). More so, I can hear the spirit of exploration of those artists come through in these tracks. Lo-fi electronics, guitar, and a sort of bedroom pop aesthetic that comes through on tracks like “nylons” and “like a secret,” with grainy beats and electric piano that accompany Smith’s sublime, dreamy vocals. Early ’90s college rock intermingles with 2000s indie.

“tired of being the good one” is a little off-kilter, keys-driven song that sounds like it could’ve come out of the early ’70s with its Brill Building pop melodies, while at the same time sounding very of it’s own as well. It’s the kind of song you wake up from a dream humming and wonder whether it’s a real song or one that came straight from REM sleep. “SOPHIE, still ascending” is just plain gorgeous. It’s like a prayer, but not to God. Just a whisper to the universe to say, “Hey, I’m still here. Thanks.”

I still don’t know a whole lot about Smith, but she’s shared all she needs to share with me in the songs of sundogsarah. The Best of Sundogsarah 2012-2022 is a dream-like listen with grainy, lo-fi pop songs that offer more each time you hit play."
